The cruise port of Ajaccio is very close to the city and offers an ideal starting point for sports activities on Corsica. This route combines nature, views, and sections along the promenade. After a short section through the city, a varied trail with a steady climb begins (about 600 meters of elevation gain in total), leading you to a spectacular 360-degree viewing platform above Ajaccio. The return trip partly follows alternative paths and ends with a relaxed stretch along the seaside promenade.
**Tip:**
In front of the cruise port, there is a daily market (except on Mondays) where you can buy many local products—in our opinion, much better than in the shops of the pedestrian zone. We made the mistake of wanting to shop at the market after our run—unfortunately, we were too late. If you want to buy some souvenirs, we recommend going to the market before your run.
The route starts at the cruise port. Initially, it leads through the city for about 1.5 kilometers, with the first climbs beginning after a short time. To compensate, beautiful sea views open up early on.
After the city section, the route transitions into a trail that continuously gains elevation. Alternating passages of steeper sections and runnable trails provide variety. Mediterranean vegetation, shady areas, and the intense scent of the plants characterize this part of the run. There are frequent views of Ajaccio and the coast.
After about 6.5 kilometers, you will reach a viewing platform that rewards you with an impressive panoramic view of the city, sea, and mountains. The platform only becomes visible late in the climb and is an ideal spot for a short break.
The return journey begins on the same route before an alternative path branches off to the right. This path leads through varied terrain and later rejoins the original trail. Alternatively, you can run the entire outbound route back.
On the outskirts of the city, the route continues south and passes the Napoleon monument, where a short and recommended detour is possible. Afterward, the route heads towards the coast to Plage du Trottel. The final 2 kilometers are a relaxed run along the promenade back to the cruise port.
This route offers a perfect combination of trail running, nature, and sightseeing. The steady climb is challenging but runnable and is rewarded with a spectacular viewpoint. This route is one of the absolute highlights around Ajaccio and is highly recommended, especially for ambitious runners and trail runners.
Corsica is a trail runner's paradise, which is why our perfect day in Ajaccio includes a run on this route. After the strenuous run, we'd wind down the day in Ajaccio's old town and at the city beach. If your ship docks early, you can combine a morning run with a subsequent food tour in Ajaccio. If you're still up for another athletic activity, a parasailing experience offers excellent views of the city and sea. Otherwise, Corsica is known for canyoning, but you'll need to drive about 50 minutes by car, taxi, or Uber from Ajaccio.
The running route starts directly at the Ajaccio cruise port.
You can either follow the route directly on the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigating with the GPX file as it is much more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS while you run. Once you have saved the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline. We suggest testing the navigation in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi beforehand to ensure it works without an internet connection.
**Tip:**
For added security, it's still a good idea to have internet access on the go. For cruises, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable, for example, from eSIM.sm (advertisement).
The route partially runs along roads, but mostly on sidewalks. Overall, it can be considered safe.
Plan for a sufficient time buffer, especially for afternoon runs. If time gets tight, you should check if you can shorten the route or if returning on the same path is faster. On this route, you can turn around earlier on the trail and run back the same way. For emergencies, it is also recommended to save the ship's phone number, which is usually listed in the daily program, beforehand. Uber works in Corsica, so it's a good idea to have the app on your phone to quickly get a taxi if needed.
There is a pay toilet on the promenade near the Citadelle (private, not always open). A free alternative is located at Plage du Trottel (not always open and slightly off the route). As far as we know, there are no public water fountains along the route. For this trail run, you should definitely bring something to drink.
You should definitely have enough water with you on this route. We ran it in regular road running shoes and managed just fine. However, if you have trail shoes, they are recommended, as it can get a bit slippery on the rocks downhill.
Depending on the weather, we recommend bringing sun protection (ad) and a phone or a running watch for navigation.
