Coastal long run up to 32 km or bike ride with promenade and beaches

Lanzarote's cruise port is located in the capital Arrecife on the east of the island. This route runs south along the coast and offers excellent conditions for a flat long run or tempo training. The wide promenade is also suitable for alternative training by bike.

Note on bike rental: A bike rental is located directly in the cruise port. The provider is called Draisiana and should be directly visible as soon as you leave the ship. As of 2026, the price is 10 euros per day per bike. As far as we know, unfortunately no sports bikes are available, but mainly city bikes and mountain bikes and a few e-bikes. The quality of the bikes also varies greatly, so we recommend being at the rental early so that the bike can be exchanged if necessary.

Route description

Start at Arrecife Cruise Port

The route starts directly after exiting the cruise port. From there, it runs left along the road towards the city center and passes Playa del Reducto and Parque Temático. Further along, the route transitions into a wide and well-developed running and cycling path that runs along the coast.

Beaches, Airport, and Puerto del Carmen

The route passes several beaches such as Playa del Cable, Playa de la Concha, and Playa de Guacimeta. This section offers a good view of the airport, allowing you to observe planes taking off and landing. The route then continues along further beaches like Playa de los Pocillos before finally reaching Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen. This is the turnaround point before returning along the same route.

Tempo Training

For targeted tempo training, the route can be flexibly adjusted by turning back after half of the planned distance. For example, turning back in the Playa Honda area results in a total distance of approximately 11 km.

Conclusion

The route offers excellent training conditions for flat runs and cycling along the coast. It is particularly suitable for long runs and tempo training due to its even profile and well-maintained surface. The only drawback is that the outward and return routes are identical.

Perfect day

This route is ideal for a focused training session during your shore excursion. Due to its flexible distance, it can be planned as both a short tempo run and a longer long run. The guided volcano hike doesn't take too long, so there's usually time for a longer run in the afternoon.

Alternatively, a relaxed day trip across the island is a great option, visiting several of Lanzarote's highlights. This tour is less athletic but specifically designed for cruise passengers and ideal for getting a comprehensive impression of the island. Depending on the return time, the running route can be flexibly shortened or supplemented as an easy session. However, plan for ample buffer time.

Frequently asked questions

Does the route start directly from the cruise port or do I need a transfer?

The running route starts in the immediate vicinity of the cruise port.

How does navigation work with the map and GPX file? Do I need internet?

You can either follow the route directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigating via the GPX file, as it is significantly more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS while you are running. After saving the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing the navigation in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi beforehand to ensure it works even without an internet connection.

Tip: For safety, it's still useful to have internet on the go. If your mobile provider on Lanzarote offers no or only expensive data roaming, a global data plan that works in many countries – for example, from eSIM.sm (advertisement) – is suitable for cruises.

Is the route safe?

The route first follows roads with sidewalks and then predominantly a separate promenade and bike path. Overall, it is considered very safe.

What should I do if I can't continue or run out of time?

Plan for ample buffer time. The route can be shortened at any time by turning back earlier. For emergencies, it's advisable to save the ship's phone number in advance. Additionally, apps like Uber or Bolt should be installed. However, these services are only partially available on Lanzarote, so taxis are often necessary.

Are there public restrooms and places to get water along the route?

There is a public restroom at Playa Grande at the turnaround point. Another free restroom is available at Playa del Reducto near Pizzeria Amore Mio (opening hours approx. 10 AM to 7 PM). Water fountains are not known, but there are opportunities to buy drinks. However, we recommend carrying enough water with you.

What is the terrain like and what equipment do you recommend?

The route is mainly on paved and asphalted paths. Regular running shoes are sufficient. We also recommend bringing sun protection (ad), enough water, and a cell phone or running watch for navigation. In addition, a payment method is useful, although you can usually pay by card or smartphone on Lanzarote.
