Barcelona is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the Mediterranean and offers excellent conditions for sports activities. The combination of city, harbor, and beach allows for varied runs right by the water. This 5-km route leads through the marina and along the beach promenade towards the famous W-Hotel. The focus is on a relaxed run with good conditions and a maritime atmosphere.
**Important note about the start:**
The recommended starting point is at the Columbus Monument near the World Trade Center, as it is easily accessible by Cruise Shuttle Bus (as of 2026: single fare €3, round trip €4.50). Starting directly at the terminal is also possible, but extends the route by several kilometers.
The route begins at the Monumento a Colón and first crosses the Rambla de Mar, which forms the transition to the well-known promenade La Rambla. From there, it continues towards Maremagnum and along the marina promenade.
After the marina, the route leads to Barcelona's city beach. From here, you get a view of the striking W-Hotel. The route now runs for about one kilometer along the wide and well-developed beach promenade. At Parc de la Barceloneta, there is a change of direction to the left before the route returns via Carrer de Balboa towards the Columbus Monument.
The route is particularly suitable for a relaxed run along the coast with very good running conditions. The focus is less on classic sightseeing and more on an easily runnable, flat route right by the sea. It is ideal as a supplement to your daily program or for runners who have already explored Barcelona's central sights.
Barcelona is good to explore on foot, which is why for our perfect day in Barcelona, we lean towards the 10-km sightseeing route or even the large 19-km loop. After the run, we treat ourselves to a culinary tour with tapas and wine.
If you prefer to run this promenade route, it's a good idea to discover Barcelona's highlights beforehand on a guided bike tour or e-bike tour.
The running route starts at the Columbus Monument near the World Trade Center, which you can reach after a short ride on the Cruise Shuttle Bus (single fare: 3 Euros; round trip: 4.50 Euros). You can also start walking directly from the terminal. Depending on the berth, the one-way distance can already be 2 to 4 kilometers.
You can either follow the route directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigation via the GPX file, as it is much more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS while you run. After saving the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing the navigation in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi beforehand to ensure it works without an internet connection.
Tip: For safety, it is still useful to have internet access on the go. For cruises, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable, e.g., from eSIM.sm (advertisement).
Expect car traffic on the roads. Generally, you'll find good sidewalks. There is no car traffic on the beach promenade. The route is therefore generally safe, but – as always when running in the city – an increased level of awareness is required.
Especially for afternoon runs, plan enough buffer time. If time is short, you should check if you can shorten the route or if the return journey on the same route is faster. With apps like Uber or Bolt, you can also quickly order a taxi in Barcelona. In case of emergency, it is also advisable to save the ship's phone number, which is usually provided in the daily program, beforehand.
There is a public restroom on the beach promenade. As far as we know, there are no water dispensers along the route. However, you will pass numerous stores where you can buy something to drink if necessary.
The route runs over asphalted and paved paths, so normal running shoes are perfectly adequate. We also recommend bringing sun protection (ad), enough water, and a cell phone or running watch for navigation, depending on the weather. Additionally, a payment method is useful, although in Barcelona you can usually pay by card or smartphone.
