The Funchal cruise port is located on the south of Madeira Island and offers ideal conditions to discover many of the city's highlights on a run. This 5 km loop takes you from the harbor through Funchal's old town and along the promenade. In addition to the historic old town, you'll also discover Funchal's marina and several viewpoints along the coast.
**Important note about the start:** The starting point of the route is located between the South Pier and the North Pier of the cruise port. Depending on your ship's berth, the route may be slightly longer or shorter.
The route begins near the cruise port between the two piers. From there, it first runs along the promenade towards the marina and then leads into the city.
After a short distance, you'll reach central points of the old town, like the Cathedral. The route continues towards Mercado dos Lavradores and then through Rua de Santa Maria, one of the city's oldest streets. Further along, you'll reach a viewpoint and Forte de São Tiago. The return route leads along the promenade back towards the cruise port. Optionally, you can make a short detour to the Cristiano Ronaldo statue at the CR7 Museum.
The 5 km running route from Funchal cruise port passes several of the city's main attractions. This jogging loop offers good trail conditions and is perfect for a short active shore excursion or as a start or end to your stay in Funchal.
Madeira offers ideal conditions to combine sports activities with nature experiences. A run along the coast or a shorter sightseeing loop through Funchal is a good way to start or end the day actively.
If you want to discover more of the island before or after, you can plan a guided excursion into nature. Canyoning tours for beginners are particularly popular, where you explore waterfalls, natural pools, and gorges. A guided hike along the Levadas, typical and particularly charming for Madeira, allows you to delve deeper into Madeira's landscape and learn more about the island at the same time.
The running route starts in the immediate vicinity of the cruise port.
You can either follow the route directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigating via the GPX file, as it is much more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS while you are running. After saving the GPX file to your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing navigation in flight mode without active Wi-Fi beforehand to ensure it works without an internet connection.
Tip: For safety, it is still useful to have internet access on the go. If your mobile provider in Madeira offers no or only expensive data roaming, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable for cruises – for example, from eSIM.sm (advertisement).
The route partly leads through the city center and along streets, but mostly along sidewalks and promenades. Overall, it is considered safe.
Especially for afternoon runs, plan enough time buffer. Since you are mostly near the harbor, you can always return to the promenade and walk from there to the ship. For emergencies, it's also advisable to save the ship's phone number in advance. You should also have apps like Uber or Bolt on your phone and be familiar with how to use them. Uber and Bolt work very well in Madeira.
There is a public restroom at Palácio de São Lourenço. Drinking water stations are not known along the route, but there are numerous places to buy something.
The route runs on asphalt and paved paths. Normal running shoes are sufficient. We also recommend bringing sun protection (ad), enough water, and a device for navigation. Payment options are also useful, although you can usually pay by card or smartphone in Madeira.
