Route description

Start at the Citadella in Victoria

The starting point is at the Citadella in Victoria, which should definitely be visited before your run (free entry). The route itself first leads through lively streets in the old town and smaller alleys.

From Victoria to Xlendi and along the coast

The route then leads via a combination of road sections and natural paths towards Xlendi. The path here is easy to run and continuously slopes gently downhill towards the sea. From Xlendi, the longest trail section along the coast begins. The path runs along wide trails with sea views. After several kilometers, the route briefly leaves the coast and passes through the village of Sannat.

Mġarr ix-Xini Bay and back to Mgarr Harbor

In the area of Mġarr ix-Xini Bay, the path descends more steeply and then climbs back up via stairs. This section requires some attention. Further along, there are also individual sections with loose ground and steeper inclines. The last section leads back towards the harbor. After a technically more challenging descent, you will reach easily runnable paths again and finally the finish line at Mgarr harbor.

Conclusion

A varied coastal trail with long sections along the cliffs and several scenic highlights. Especially the opportunity to visit the Citadella beforehand and the change from city, coast, and nature make the route versatile and highly recommended. Note that a transfer to the starting point in Victoria is required.

Perfect day

This run can be easily combined with a visit to the Citadella. Start your morning with the bus ride to Victoria, take some time for the old town, and then begin the trail back to the harbor. This way, you combine sightseeing and nature on one route. If you still have energy afterward, you can end the day with another excursion along the coast or explore individual places. As an alternative to the trail, a quad bike tour is suitable.

Frequently asked questions

Does the route start directly from the cruise port, or do I need a transfer?

The route starts in Victoria and requires a transfer from Mgarr harbor by bus or Bolt.

How do I navigate with the map and GPX file? Do I need internet?

You can follow the route either directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigating via the GPX file, as it is much more precise and you receive clear guidance via GPS while running. After saving the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing the navigation beforehand in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi to ensure it works without an internet connection.

Tip: For safety, it is still useful to have internet access on the go. If your mobile provider in Malta does not offer data roaming or only high-cost options, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable for cruises – for example, from eSIM.sm (advertisement).

Is the route safe?

The route mainly runs on clearly recognizable paths. In some sections, the ground is uneven or stony, requiring attention.

What should I do if I can't continue or run out of time?

Plan enough time for the run and potential breaks. There are only a few options for a quick bailout along the route, so you should choose your pace accordingly.

Are there public restrooms and drinking facilities along the route?

There is a public restroom at the Citadella. No other facilities are known along the route. We are also not aware of any drinking facilities.

What kind of terrain does the route have, and what equipment do you recommend?

The route runs over asphalt, cobblestones, and predominantly hiking trails. Trail shoes or sturdy running shoes are advantageous. You should also bring enough water and sun protection (ad).
