The Santa Cruz de La Palma cruise port is located on the east of the Canary Island of La Palma. This 10 km route runs south along the coast to the coastal village of Los Cancajos, connecting several black beaches with promenade sections and beautiful views of the Atlantic.
The route starts directly at the exit of the Santa Cruz de La Palma cruise port. From there, it first heads towards the city center and then along Avenida Bajamar south to Playa de Bajamar. Further on, the route largely follows the coast. Portions run along narrow but easily runnable sidewalks next to a lightly trafficked road. Optionally, a short section directly on Playa de los Guinchos can be integrated before the route returns to the road.
The route then continues towards Los Cancajos. There, the most beautiful section of the loop begins. A small path leads to Playa Los Cancajos. From there, the route follows the promenade and later Calle La Corvina back to the larger road. From there, the return trip follows the same route back towards the cruise port.
This 10 km running route from the Santa Cruz de La Palma cruise port is great for discovering the coast of La Palma and some of its black beaches. The small coastal village of Los Cancajos is also worth a quick stop. However, the path there is not entirely ideal, as it sometimes runs along quite narrow, but still runnable, sidewalks.
The route is well suited as a sporty start to the day or as a conclusion to your stay after an excursion on La Palma.
If you want a more intensive experience of the island's volcanic landscapes and mountain regions, you can take a guided trekking tour to Roque de los Muchachos. Transfer is available near the cruise port, allowing for a shorter run or walk along the coast before or after the tour.
Alternatively, a private volcano tour with pickup directly at the cruise port is available. The advantage is a more flexible day design. Depending on your schedule, a smaller hike can be arranged, or a leisurely run or walk along the beaches and promenades of Santa Cruz de La Palma can be done afterwards.
The route starts directly at the exit of the Santa Cruz de La Palma cruise port.
You can follow the route directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigation via the GPX file, as it is much more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS while running. After saving the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing navigation in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi beforehand to ensure it works without an internet connection.
Tip: For safety, it's still useful to have internet while on the go. If your mobile provider on La Palma offers no or expensive data roaming, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable for cruises – for example, from eSIM.sm (advertisement).
The route partly follows roads with narrower sidewalks. However, the affected roads are usually not heavily trafficked, so the route is generally considered safe.
The route can always be shortened by turning back earlier. In case of emergency, it is advisable to save the ship's phone number in advance. Additionally, apps like Uber or Bolt should be installed and ready for use. However, these services are limited on La Palma, so conventional taxis often have to be used.
Public restrooms are not known along the route. However, there is a public restroom in the middle of Playa de Santa Cruz de La Palma near the harbor. Public drinking water fountains are also not known along the route, but there are opportunities to buy drinks.
The route mainly runs on paved roads and sidewalks. Normal running shoes are sufficient. We also recommend bringing sun protection (ad), enough water, and a cell phone or watch for navigation. A payment method is also useful, although on La Palma you can usually pay with card or smartphone.
