Savona's cruise port is located very close to the city, offering great conditions for a short workout combined with sightseeing. The route combines historic buildings, a pleasant promenade, and the charming old town. This 5k loop takes you through the impressive Priamar Fortress, along the coast, and through the winding alleys of the old town.
The starting point is at the traffic circle between the two cruise terminals. From here, the route leads directly to the Priamar Fortress, which you will pass through (as of 2026: no entrance fee). Afterwards, you'll get onto the promenade, which runs for several kilometers along the coast for a relaxed stretch. After crossing the Letimbro River, the route continues along the promenade before turning right into the city.
Shortly after, you'll turn right again, and the route leads over another bridge into the old town. There, it runs through several narrow alleys, passing by landmarks including Savona's famous Sistine Chapel. You'll cross the modern Ponte Sandro Pertini pedestrian bridge to return to the port area. From there, the route follows the harbor back to the starting point at the traffic circle.
The route offers a balanced mix of coastal sections and an old town experience, making it an ideal workout to start or end your stay in Savona. The section between the beach promenade and the old town is less attractive and partly runs on narrow sidewalks. Alternatively, you can bypass this part by running back along the promenade and turning towards the old town east of the Letimbro. For longer workouts, the route can easily be extended along the promenade, which is also suitable for tempo runs.
Our highlight in Savona is the Priamar Fortress. However, this route only covers the above-ground paths. The underground passages can be discovered on an interesting and inexpensive guided tour that you can book here. Especially if you're walking, you can easily integrate the guided tour into this route. Alternatively, you can explore the old town in more detail. For a more athletic activity, consider this guided kayak tour to Bergeggi Island. You can reach the starting point at Bagni Kon Tiki with a 30-minute train ride or a 20-minute taxi ride.
The running route starts directly at the cruise port, at the connection point between the two terminals. Depending on where your ship is docked, your run might be longer if you start from the ship.
You can either follow the route directly on the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigating with the GPX file, as it is much more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS during your run. After you've saved the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline as well. We recommend testing the navigation in airplane mode with Wi-Fi turned off beforehand to ensure it works without an internet connection.
**Tip:**
For added security, it's still a good idea to have internet access while you're out. For cruises, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable, e.g., from eSIM.sm (advertisement).
The route partly runs along busy roads, but on sidewalks. Even though the sidewalks are sometimes narrow and you have to cross a few intersections, the route is considered safe.
Especially for afternoon runs, plan for a sufficient time buffer. If you're running short on time, check if you can shorten the route or if returning the same way you came is faster. For emergencies, it's also advisable to save the ship's phone number, usually found in the daily program, beforehand. Apps like Uber or Bolt are not reliable in Italy. Regular taxis can be booked through the FreeNow app.
There is a public restroom at the Priamar Fortress. As far as we know, there are no water fountains along the route. However, there are supermarkets and kiosks where you can buy something to drink.
The route is on paved and cobblestone paths, so regular running shoes are perfectly fine. Depending on the weather, we also recommend sun protection (ad), enough water, and a phone or a running watch for navigation. It's also a good idea to have a payment method with you, although in Savona you can usually pay with a card or your smartphone.
