The Walvis Bay cruise port is located near the city and serves as a starting point for many excursions. Although the city itself is quite industrial, the Lagoon Promenade offers great opportunities for a workout. This 6-km route leads through the city to the promenade and back—through areas that are generally considered safe.
After leaving the port area via the northern exit, you will first cross the railroad tracks. The route then follows 6th Street for about 2 kilometers towards the promenade.
After a few small detours through various streets, you'll finally reach the Lagoon Promenade. There, the route runs along the water for a short distance before heading back to the port via 6th Street. Alternatively, you can take a direct path straight to the promenade and run the same way back.
In Walvis Bay, the Lagoon Promenade is the best place for a workout. Since this route only covers a short section of it, the 10-km loop is a more attractive option for many. The path through the city is less spectacular, but it's easy to run and conveniently accessible directly from the cruise port.
A real highlight in Walvis Bay is an excursion to Sandwich Harbour. The combination of massive dunes, desert, and the Atlantic coast offers one of the most impressive natural experiences in Namibia and is far more spectacular than typical city tours. A 4x4 dune drive combined with the unique landscapes there is particularly popular. Kayak tours at Pelican Point, where you can watch seals in the water, also offer an extraordinary experience. Pelican Point is famous for its large seal colony right on the coast.
A perfect day in Walvis Bay, therefore, includes an excursion to Sandwich Harbour and a workout along the promenade. This is a great way to combine a nature adventure with exercise, starting right from the cruise port.
The running route starts in the immediate vicinity of the cruise port.
You can either follow the route directly on the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend using the GPX file for navigation, as it's far more precise and gives you clear GPS guidance while you run. Once you have saved the GPX file in your app, you can typically use the map offline. We suggest testing the navigation in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi in advance to ensure it works without an internet connection.
**Tip:**
For added safety, it's a good idea to have internet access while you're out. For cruises, a global data plan that works in multiple countries, like one from eSIM.sm (advertisement), is a great option.
The area around the route is generally considered very safe. The streets do not have heavy traffic and have sidewalks.
Plan to have a sufficient time buffer, especially for afternoon runs. If you're running short on time, see if you can shorten the route or if returning along the same path is quicker. For emergencies, we recommend saving the ship's phone number beforehand, which is usually listed in the daily program. Ride-sharing apps like Uber or Bolt are not widely available in Namibia, but regular taxis are. US dollars or euros are often accepted in Walvis Bay.
There are no known public restrooms or drinking fountains along the route. There are some shops where you can buy something to drink.
The route follows asphalt and paved paths. Regular running shoes are therefore completely sufficient. Depending on the weather, we also recommend bringing sun protection (ad), plenty of water, and a phone or running watch for navigation. It's also a good idea to carry a form of payment, though you can often pay by card or smartphone in Walvis Bay.
