The cruise port of Abu Dhabi is located around 2.5 kilometers from the famous Corniche promenade. This half marathon route directly connects the cruise port with one of the most beautiful running promenades in the United Arab Emirates. The route follows the skyline, passes several city beaches, and continues all the way to the end of the Corniche at West Bay Beach.
The route starts directly at the Abu Dhabi cruise port. After leaving the port area, the route first follows wide pedestrian and cycling paths toward the city center. Several streets must be crossed at zebra crossings before reaching the famous Corniche promenade.
At the Corniche, the route follows a very well-developed promenade directly by the sea. On the right side are the beaches and the waters of the Arabian Gulf, while the Abu Dhabi skyline rises on the left side. Highlights include the Rixos Marina Hotel, the Etihad Towers, the Nation Towers, and many other skyscrapers along the coast. The turnaround point is located at West Bay Beach, the end of the Corniche promenade. Afterwards, the route returns along the same path back to the cruise port.
The Corniche is one of the best running locations in the Emirates and is ideal for a half marathon directly from the cruise port, provided you are comfortable with the often high temperatures. The long and wide paths without car traffic create excellent running conditions. The only disadvantages are the first kilometers through the city and the fact that the route follows the same path out and back. In return, the route offers impressive skyline and sea views during the entire run.
This route is ideal for anyone who wants to use their stay in Abu Dhabi for a long run. Because temperatures are often very high, we recommend starting as early as possible in the morning.
If you also want to visit the main highlights of Abu Dhabi, you can check whether there is enough time to combine the run with a guided tour to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the Royal Palace, and the Etihad Towers.
Another option is a sightseeing boat tour along the Abu Dhabi skyline. Transportation must be organized individually. It is also possible to complete a long run back to the cruise port after the excursion, as even the shortest route along the Corniche is around 13 kilometers long.
The route starts directly at the Abu Dhabi cruise port. No transfer is required.
You can either follow the route directly on the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app such as Komoot. We recommend using the GPX file because it provides much more precise GPS navigation while running. Once the GPX file is saved in your app, offline navigation is usually possible as well.
We recommend testing the navigation beforehand in airplane mode without Wi-Fi to make sure it works without an internet connection.
Tip: It is still useful to have internet access while traveling. If your mobile provider offers expensive roaming in the United Arab Emirates, a global data plan for cruises can be a good solution, for example from eSIM.sm (advertisement).
The route is generally considered very safe. There is no car traffic along the Corniche promenade. At the beginning of the route, however, several streets must be crossed. Extra attention is recommended at zebra crossings.
The route can easily be shortened at any point by turning around earlier along the Corniche. There are also taxis available regularly along the promenade. Apps such as Bolt, Uber, and Careem work very well in Abu Dhabi. For emergencies, it is also recommended to save the ship's phone number in advance.
There are many free drinking water stations along the Corniche promenade. Public toilets are available, for example, at Corniche Beach.
The route follows asphalt roads, wide pedestrian paths, and paved promenade sections. Regular running shoes are sufficient. Because of the distance, we also recommend carrying enough water or a collapsible bottle (ad), as it can easily be refilled at the many drinking water stations along the route. We also recommend sunscreen (ad) and a phone or sports watch for navigation. A payment option is useful as well, although in Abu Dhabi you can usually pay everywhere by card or smartphone.
