Ajaccio's cruise port is very close to the city and offers an ideal starting point for athletic activities in Corsica. This route combines beautiful city views with sights such as the Napoleon Statue and sections along the promenade.
**Tip:**
A market takes place daily (except Mondays) in front of the cruise port, where you can buy many local products – in our opinion, much better than in the pedestrian zone shops. We made the mistake of wanting to shop at the market after our run – but unfortunately, we were too late. If you want to buy souvenirs, we recommend you go to the market before your run.
The route starts at the cruise port and first leads through the alleys of the old town and an adjacent residential neighborhood. You'll continuously gain elevation. After about 2 km, a short trail section begins, leading to a viewpoint with city and ocean views.
The route then goes downhill again and heads south. Shortly after, you'll pass the famous Napoleon Monument. A short detour into the area is worthwhile (as of 2026: no admission fee).
Afterward, you'll take the wide sidewalk of Cours du Général Leclerc back towards the harbor. Before the finish, the route leads to the promenade, which you'll run along, before heading back to the starting point.
Although this route has some elevation gain, it offers a varied combination of viewpoints, monuments, and beach promenades. It passes many of Ajaccio's highlights and is therefore highly recommended for combining sightseeing and athletic activity.
Corsica is a paradise for trail running, which is why on our perfect day in Ajaccio, we complete a run on our 17-km trail route. After this strenuous run, we end the day in Ajaccio's old town and at the city beach. If you dock early, you can combine a morning run with a subsequent food tour in Ajaccio. If you're still in the mood for an athletic activity, a parasailing experience offers excellent views of the city and ocean. Alternatively, Corsica is known for canyoning, which requires about a 50-minute car, taxi, or Uber ride from Ajaccio.
The running route starts directly at Ajaccio's cruise port.
You can follow the route either directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigation via the GPX file, as it is much more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS while you run. After saving the GPX file to your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing the navigation beforehand in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi to ensure it works without an internet connection.
Tip: For safety, it's still useful to have internet access on the go. A global data plan that works in many countries, such as from eSIM.sm (advertisement), is suitable for cruises.
The route partially runs along roads, but mostly on sidewalks. Overall, it is therefore considered safe.
Especially for afternoon runs, plan for plenty of buffer time. If time is running out, you should check if you can shorten the route or if returning on the same path is faster. For emergencies, it's also advisable to save the ship's phone number, usually listed in the daily program, beforehand. Uber works in Corsica, so it's a good idea to have the app on your phone to quickly get a taxi if needed.
There is a paid restroom on the promenade near the Citadelle (private, not always open). A free alternative is located at Plage du Trottel (not always open and a bit off the route). As far as we know, there are no public water fountains along the route.
The route runs over asphalt and paved paths and a short trail section. Normal running shoes are sufficient for this. Depending on the weather, we recommend bringing sun protection (ad), enough water, and a cell phone or running watch for navigation. Additionally, a payment method is useful, although in Ajaccio you can usually pay by card or smartphone.
