Route description

Start at Porto de Leixões cruise port

The route starts directly at the exit of the cruise port and initially leads south along the promenade. At Rotunda da Anémona, the route continues along the promenade to Forte de São Francisco Xavier, also known as Castelo do Queijo.

Along the coast to Farolim da Barra and back

Further on, the route consistently follows the coastline. After a few kilometers, you reach the Farolim da Barra lighthouse at the end of the pier, which marks the turnaround point of the route. The return journey follows the same route along the promenade back to the cruise port.

Conclusion

This route stands out primarily for its simplicity and excellent runnability. The wide promenade allows for a consistent rhythm without major interruptions. The out-and-back nature of the route is less varied, but is compensated by the continuous views of the Atlantic. For a relaxed run or walk directly from the cruise port, this route is a very good choice.

Perfect day

Porto can be divided into two parts: a sporty activity by the sea, and a cultural part in the old town or surrounding area. This 10-km route is ideal as a relaxed start to the day directly from the cruise port.

A guided e-bike tour through Porto is a great combination. This allows you to efficiently discover the city's main attractions without having to tackle the steep climbs yourself. Alternatively, walking tours are also available to explore Porto at a leisurely pace.

If you want to experience the nature around Porto, a 4x4 tour into the nearby mountains offers an exciting and adventurous alternative (with transfer from the harbor).

Frequently asked questions

Does the route start directly from the cruise port or do I need a transfer?

The route starts directly at the promenade at the exit of the Porto de Leixões cruise port. A transfer is not necessary.

How does navigation work with the map and GPX file? Do I need internet?

You can either follow the route directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigating via the GPX file, as it is much more precise and provides clear guidance via GPS while running. After saving the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing navigation in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi beforehand to ensure it works even without an internet connection.

Tip: For safety, it is still useful to have internet on the go. If your mobile provider does not offer data roaming in Portugal or only at expensive rates, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable for cruises – for example from eSIM.sm (advertisement).

Is the route safe?

The route mainly runs on promenade paths without car traffic and is therefore very safe.

What do I do if I can't go on or time is running out?

Especially for afternoon runs, plan enough buffer time. If time is short, you can turn back at any point along the promenade. For emergencies, it is also advisable to save the ship's phone number in advance. You should also have apps like Uber or Bolt on your phone and be familiar with their use. In Porto, Uber and Bolt work very well.

Are there public restrooms and drinking water along the route?

Public restrooms are available at Praia de Matosinhos. Public water fountains are not known along the route.

What is the surface of the route and what equipment do you recommend?

The route runs on wide asphalted promenade paths. Normal running shoes are sufficient. We also recommend bringing sun protection (ad), enough water, and a cell phone or running watch for navigation. In addition, a payment method is useful, although in Porto you can usually pay by card or smartphone.
