The Porto de Leixões harbor is located northwest of Porto in the municipality of Matosinhos. Even though the old town is a few kilometers away, the area around the harbor offers excellent conditions for a workout. This 5-km route connects the Matosinhos beach promenade with the expansive Parque da Cidade and is ideal for a relaxed run or walk directly from the ship.
The route begins directly at the cruise port exit and first heads south along the promenade of Praia de Matosinhos. This section is flat, well-maintained, and offers clear views of the Atlantic.
At Rotunda da Anemona, the route continues right along a promenade path to Forte de São Francisco Xavier, also known as Castelo do Queijo.
After a short walk back, an underpass leads into Parque da Cidade. There, the route follows wide paths through a green park landscape. Within the park, the route can be flexibly extended slightly before returning to the promenade via a different path.
After leaving the park, the route leads back to the coast and along the promenade to the cruise port.
The route is ideal for a shorter workout before or after an excursion. If you want to see more of Porto itself during a workout, you should use the longer alternatives. However, for a relaxed run or walk in the immediate vicinity of the harbor, this loop is a very solid choice.
Porto can be easily divided into two parts: a workout by the sea and a cultural part in the old town or surrounding area. This 5-km route is ideal for a relaxed start to the day directly at the cruise port.
A guided e-bike tour through Porto is a great combination. This allows you to efficiently discover the city's main sights without having to tackle the steep climbs yourself. Alternatively, walking tours are also available to explore Porto at a relaxed pace.
If you want to experience the nature around Porto, a 4x4 tour into the nearby mountains offers an exciting and adventurous alternative (with transfer from the harbor).
The route starts directly at the exit of Porto de Leixões cruise port. A transfer is not necessary.
You can either follow the route directly via the map on this page or import the GPX file into a navigation app like Komoot. We recommend navigating via the GPX file, as it is significantly more precise and gives you clear guidance via GPS while running. Once you have saved the GPX file in your app, you can usually use the map offline. We recommend testing navigation beforehand in airplane mode without active Wi-Fi to ensure it works without an internet connection.
Tip: For safety, it's still useful to have internet on the go. If your mobile provider in Portugal offers no or expensive data roaming, a global data plan that works in many countries is suitable for cruises – for example, from eSIM.sm (advertisement).
The route predominantly follows promenade and park paths without car traffic and is therefore considered very safe.
Especially for afternoon runs, plan for plenty of buffer time. If time runs short, you can shorten the loop in Parque da Cidade or turn back directly on the promenade. For emergencies, it's also advisable to save the ship's phone number beforehand. You should also have apps like Uber or Bolt on your phone and be familiar with their use. Uber and Bolt work very well in Porto.
There is a public restroom at Praia de Matosinhos. Public water fountains are not known along the route.
The route follows asphalted promenade paths and paved natural paths in the park. Normal running shoes are sufficient. We also recommend bringing sun protection (ad), enough water, and a cell phone or running watch for navigation. In addition, a payment method is useful, although you can usually pay by card or smartphone in Porto.
